UCD claim points at Morton

Saturday, March 14, 2009 By John Fallon @ 1:13 AM :: Club News, Match Reports

Sporting Fingal 0-1 UCD.

UCD recorded their second successive victory of the season when they struck a late winner to upset Sporting Fingal at Morton Stadium.

Striker Ciaran Kilduff made up for some earlier misses when he netted the winner with ten minutes left by stabbing home from close-range after Andy Boyle’s header hit the crossbar and fell kindly into his path.

The Students were the better side in the first half and were unlucky not to be in the lead ahead at the break, with Sean Harding’s curling free-kick on 21 minutes angling just over Darren Quigley’s crossbar.

Robery Bayly had headed wide for Fingal on four minutes but, for the second game in a row, they were unable to penetrate the opposing defence and didn’t create many openings.

Midfielder Conan Byrne tried his luck with a long free-kick midway through the second half which whistled and Ross Gaynor couldn’t make the most of the chance presented after Brian Shortall’s clearing header only reached the edge of the area.

Gaynor could have snatched Fingal a point in the dying minutes only for goalkeeper Ger Barron to push his rasping volley around the post.
