Conan’s goal against former club closes the gap at the top

Friday, May 29, 2009 By John Fallon @ 12:01 AM :: Match Reports

UCD 0-1 Sporting Fingal

The Belfield Bowl on Thursday was the stage for Sporting Fingal’s second game in six days and it was scene of a great win by Fingal over co-leaders UCD.

Conan Byrne provided the winner with 15 minutes left, capitalising on a stray pass by Philip McMahon to fire home from the edge of the box.

Leaders Waterford United had the chance to extend their lead at the top when they hosted Wexford Youths at the RSC but the Blues suffered a 2-1 loss. Shelbourne's late victory over Monaghan United gives them the upperhand in the title race. They are a point off top spot with a game in hand over their championship rivals.

Sporting Fingal (4-3-3): Quigley; Gannon, McFaul (Whelan 59), Frost, Fitzgerald; Kirby, Bayly, Williams; C. Byrne, Gaynor, Zayed.

UCD (4-4-2): Brennan; Matthews, Boyle, E. McMillan, Shorthall; Reilly (Ward 75), Creevy, Finn, Mulhall (McMahon); D. McMillan (Purcell), Kilduff.
