Fingal see off Bray to record first Airtricity league win

Saturday, March 20, 2010 By John Fallon @ 1:05 AM :: Match Reports

Bray Wanderers 1-3 Sporting Fingal.

Gary O'Neill brought his tally to three goals in two games as his second-half brace helped Sporting Fingal overcome Bray Wanderers on Friday in the Airtricity League Premier Division.

Despite the mist and rain at the Carlisle Grounds, Liam Buckley's men returned to the venue were they secured top-flight status to condemn bottom of the table Bray Wanderers to their third straight defeat.

Having had an early free header fly wide, the ex-Bray striker Eamon Zayed again returned to haunt his former club in the 15th minute.

Full-back Ger O'Brien embarked on a mazy run and played a reverse pass back to Zayed. He turned his marker on the edge of the box and shot low past Brian Kane in to the bottom corner of the net.

Yet the Seagulls almost grabbed an instant reply.

Chris Shields got on the end of James Kavanagh's 17th minute corner, but his glancing back-post header dropped inches wide.

After defeats to Dundalk and Galway, the Wicklow side drafted in record appearance holder Colm Tresson in central defence. With Dane Massey suspended, Philip Knight reverted to left-full.

The Ravens - who'd picked up just a point from their first two matches - handed Zayed his first start of the campaign in place of Alan Kirby who dropped to the bench.

Keith Quinn also had to be content with a place amongst the  substitutes as Stephen Paisley started at left-back.

The visitors doubled their lead eight minutes into the second period.

Ronan Finn robbed Robbie Doyle of possession and burst into the penalty area. Conan Byrne nipped in to get to the end-line and cut the ball back for O'Neill to lift a close-range effort into the roof of the net.

That prompted Eddie Gormley to bring on new Spanish recruit Juan Pablo Rodriguez.

He almost scored with his very first touch. But his front post attempt was blocked out for a corner in a goal-mouth scramble.

Straight away at the other end, Finn left three opponents in his wake to slide the ball past Kane only for Colm Tresson to hack off the line.

Wanderers were thrown a 75th minute lifeline. Philip Knight's centre rebounded to Shane O'Neill whose initial shot was blocked. But the young striker cracked a stunning 22-yard drive past a despairing Brendan Clarke.

But the Dubliner's snuffed out any hope of a comeback with a third in the 81st minute.

Gary O'Neill's lay-off saw Finn break clear down the right flank. He rode a tackle before sending in a low cross.

O'Neill tangled with Kane and Shane O'Connor inside the six-yard box and the striker pounced to score into an open goal as the ball ran free.
