O'Neill to the four as Fingal sweep past Drogs

Saturday, March 27, 2010 By John Fallon @ 10:56 AM :: Match Reports

Sporting Fingal 4-1 Drogheda United

Sporting Fingal moved into fourth place after securing their first home win of the season against Drogheda United thanks to a man-of-the-match performance from striker Gary O'Neill at Morton Stadium.

It took only four minutes for the hosts to open the scoring when O'Neill found last season's top scorer Conan Byrne whose cross from the right was stroked into the net by Eamon Zayed.

Drogheda looked to strike back quickly and caused Fingal problems down both flanks before forcing two corners which resulted in a long range effort from Gareth O'Connor.

The Drogs continued to push for an equaliser and it was Robbie Martin who found the net on 12 minutes after Fingal failed to deal with a third straight corner.

Alan McNally picked out Martin in space and he angled a shot past Brendan Clarke for his first goal in Drogs' colours.

There should have been another for the Louth side moments later, as Martin was again left unmarked at the back post only to snatch at the effort and blast over from a great position.

Drogs were in the ascendancy, but Ronan Finn rocketed Fingal back in front on 25 minutes with a superb low strike from the edge of the box after linking up with O'Neil and Ger O'Brien.

Back came the visitors and Brian King's cross gave Clarke a scare when his in-swinger was deflected onto the crossbar by Paisley.

Zayed then had a penalty appeal turned down as the break approached when Eric McGill appeared to have bundled him over in the box. Referee Richie Winter disagreed and turned down the appeal.

In contrast to the tense opening 45 minutes, Fingal were much more in control after the restart and extended their advantage just a minute following the turnaround.

Byrne raided down the right and cut a low cross into the six-yard box that Harris could only turn into his own net.

Zayed came agonisingly close to making it four with half an hour left when he headed O'Neill's cross straight at Skinner. But Crowley then missed the chance of the game for Drogs on 72 minutes as he fired McGill's cross wide from three yards out.

A superb volley by Byrne rattled the crossbar 20 minutes from time after O'Neill released the winger down the flank while, at the other end, Glen Fitzpatrick curled a free kick narrowly wide from twenty yards out.

The stellar effort of O'Neill was finally rewarded with 12 minutes remaining when he made it 4-1 by turning Eoghan Osbourne inside the six-yard box and easily beating Skinner with a low shot.
